EXCITING NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF PUBLISHING !

Smoke magazine issue 8, out around the beginning of May, will feature my story, Last Train. It's an A5 quarterly concern which I like very much; it's one of those things that you can take home and say "Look what I got." In a time when (mainly due to Ebay) it's so easy to obtain the most obscure crap, Smoke is a real find.

I feel like a teenage girl, getting her story printed in the school magazine. Meanwhile...

GET WELL SOON

"Of course you are."

"Yeah, me neither."

"Isn't everyone ?"

All appropriate responses to the statement "I'm writing a book." Well, I'm writing a book. It's basically about my year in hospital, but couched as fiction, with the emphases changed to make it more entertaining rather than just moan, moan, moan (that's what Misery's for).

So, here are some extracts from Get Well Soon. So far it's been written in random order but as it's pretty much a true story the chronology takes care of itself. I've produced it in chunks, some of which are able to stand alone but which aren't really substantial enough to be called chapters. If I were a big ponce I'd probably say they were vignettes. Sorry, what did you say ? OK, they're vignettes.

The main narrative is written in the present tense and requires a bit of context, which I've tried to provide. There are also "Memory" sections, written in the past tense, which generally work by themselves. If this seems a bit involved try The Da Vinci Code.
